On Battery Hill, north of the village a small military post with an earthen work redoubt was built in 1821 and thought to be the oldest building in Bathurst, the most enduring part being the powder magazine which could store 600 lbs of Gunpowder, 7,000 rounds of ball cartridge and six guns!
